Vibration in Boat Propellers

Porosity and shrinkage are usually formed during casting processes, and foreign materials or inclusions are often observed in cast propellers. These manufacturing defects generate mass imbalance in the propellers. Static balancing is required to balance the propellers by removing or grinding some materials. The balancing process is time consuming, tedious, and costly.

Bent, nicked, and eroded propellers results in violent vibration. Violent vibration produces detrimental effects to the boat, and operator and passengers, for example:

  1. Violent vibration can damage the boat’s drive train and other boat’s components.
  2. The engine draws more energy due to vibration, thus decreasing fuel efficiency.
  3. Violent vibration can be felt by the operator and passengers, thus reducing the riding comfort level.
