Vibration in Compressors

Compressors are a widely used product that come in various sizes and shapes. They are implemented in several commonly used applications such as:

  1. Refrigeration systems
  2. Air conditioning units
  3. Compressed air filling systems

The purpose of a compressor is to increase the pressure in a predetermined gas by decreasing its volume and essentially “compressing” the gas. Compressors are an important part of refrigeration and other cooling systems.

Reciprocating compressors use a piston to compress the gas in a single or multi-stage process, whereas rotary compressors include lobe, screw, scroll and vane compressors.

The compression process creates unbalanced forces within the compressor which leads to vibration. Manufacturers try to curtail vibration by using counterweights and by balancing the internal parts and components, however it cannot be eliminated entirely due to the forces generated by compressing the gas. Vibration is a form of wasted energy that reduces the efficiency of the compressor and leads to greater noise emissions.

Compressor manufacturers attempt to reduce vibration and noise emissions by using sound insulators and specialized mounting or suspension systems. These added parts and components add to the cost of manufacturing and do not solve the vibration problem at its source. The efficiency and performance of compressors can be improved if the vibration issues can be solved in compressor applications.
